The Lamp of Tears

The lamp’s form plays with this natural phenomenon through bending wood. The transition from round, to straight, to curved, gives the illusion of the walnut being bent in two different directions. The goal is to let you pause briefly, by catching your eye and creating a sensory experience. In the brief moment while you wait for the tear drop to fall, you are enveloped in a serene atmosphere where light, water, and sound come together to express emotion through design.

This six-foot tall walnut standing lamp translates the natural beauty of a tear drop into a meditative lighting experience. Inspired by the emotional symbolism of tears, from sorrow to joy, the piece tries to capture the slow descent of a droplet down a cheek.

A series of bent wood veneer branches guide individual droplets from the top reservoir down each branch, in an irregular and random motion, until they fall into the opening of the last branch. A vertical LED beam illuminates the calming movement.

The Lamp of Tears was exhibited at the Launchpad section of ICFF, The International Contemporary Furniture Fair, at the Javits Center in NYC in May 2026.
